What is required to become a skilled and effective airframe and powerplant (A&P) aviation mechanic? Although some individuals possess more knowledge and skills than others, no one is a natural-born aviation mechanic. Competent aviation mechanics become so through study, training, and experience.

This knowledge test guide will answer most of your questions about taking an aviation mechanic Airframe knowledge test by covering the following areas: knowledge test eligibility requirements; knowledge areas on the tests; descriptions of the tests; process for taking a knowledge test; use of test aids and materials; cheating or other unauthorized conduct; validity of Airman Test Reports; and retesting procedures.

Use Fast Track 2022 Airframe Test Guide for the AMA Aviation Mechanic—Airframe Knowledge Exam.

New Codes Coming to Airman Test Reports

The FAA sample questions and Airman Knowledge Test Reports may contain two types of coding. This is determined based on the availability of a published Airman Certification Standards (ACS) for the particular test in which you are taking.

  1. The Learning Statement Code (LSC) associated with question topic areas. The Learning Statement codes currently appear on the Airman Knowledge Test Report for any missed knowledge test questions for which an Airman Certification Standards (ACS) is not yet published, and the Practical Test Standard (PTS) remains the guiding document. View the complete list of LSC here.
  2. The Airman Certification Standards (ACS) code for question topic areas. The ACS codes currently appear on the Airman Knowledge Test Report for any missed knowledge test questions for which an Airman Certification Standards (ACS) has been published.
