Scott Ekern received Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Chemistry and Physical Chemistry (a chemistry and physics hybrid) from Auburn University, and a PhD in Physical Chemistry from the University of Florida. After working as a research scientist at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, Dr. Ekern switched gears and became a full-time airline pilot. He has taught university level chemistry, as well as flying as a flight instructor. Between trips, Dr. Ekern conducts research into chemical reactions thought to occur in interstellar space with computer-based quantum mechanical methods, and writes science-oriented aviation articles for his local union periodical. He holds an ATP certificate with over 11,000 hours of Part 121 turbine flying. Dr. Ekern currently flies the Boeing 737 for a major airline.
